Applications are currently invited for suitably qualified candidates in the US to apply for Truman Scholarship. However, it is the premier graduate fellowship in the United States for public service leadership. A federally funded scholarship granted to U.S. undergraduate students for showing leadership potential, academic excellence, and a commitment to public service.

Truman Scholarship is the most extremely competitive American fellowship to promote graduate education and leadership development. Annually, between 50 and 60 universities nominated candidates in their junior year are named Truman Scholars following a long application process including essays, recommendations, and an interview.

The Truman Scholarship is open to interested U.S. undergraduate students.

Scholarship Benefits of Truman Scholarship

Successful students receive a Truman Scholarship award amount of $30,000 going toward up to three years of graduate education leading to a career in the public service.

Eligibility/Requirements

To be eligible applicants must,

  • be a current junior or have senior-level standing during their third year of college enrollment at the time of application.
  • be a U.S. citizen (or U.S. national); or will receive U.S. citizenship by date the scholarship is awarded.

  • Outstanding leadership potential
  • Commitment to careers in government or in the public or not-for-profit sector
  • Strong desire to influence public policy.
  • Possess intellectual strength.
  • Extensive records of public and community service
  • Clear intent to pursue a graduate degree program

Application Deadline

  • December 2019 – February 2020: Endorsed USC candidates collaborate with AHF staff to develop and finalize application materials.
  • Early February 2020: Truman Scholarship national deadline
  • Mid-Late February 2020: Finalists notified
  • March – April 2020: Regional review panels for selected finalists
  • April 2020: Truman Scholars announced
  • May 2020: Truman Scholars Leadership Week and Awards Ceremony in Kansas City, MO.
